People shouldn’t own AR-15s because they shouldn’t “own an automatic weapon”

On Friday’s “Morning Joe” show on MSNBC, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) argued that people shouldn’t be able to get AR-15s because no one who is not in the military or in a police department “should own an automatic weapon.

While discussing the recent shooting in Farmington, New Mexico, co-host Mika Brzezinski asked, “But where would he get an AR-15, and how the hell should an AR-15 be in his hands? “

Lujan Grisham replied: “It shouldn’t. This is exactly my point. Frankly, no one who isn’t in the military – it’s a weapon of war – or in a trained police department, in my opinion, no one in America who isn’t in one of those two situations doesn’t should have an automatic weapon. There is no reason to own one. Second, I have a problem with young people without training, without support, without mental health support who have access to firearms. I think this age needs to be raised. I will ask again. I expect to win it in the legislature. We have a safe storage law so that parents are now responsible if their children have access to firearms or take them to school. We’re doing all this work, because I think you’re absolutely right. There is no reason. We are also looking at legislation that was not passed in our last legislative session to go after gun manufacturers.
