A goaltender has just made NHL history.
During the final minutes of the Penguins’ game against the Sabers on Friday, goalie Alex Nedeljkovic scored a goal from the other side of the ice, becoming the first goalie in history to record a goal and an assist in the same NHL game.
After scoring the goal, Nedeljkovic jumped onto the Penguins bench, where he was mobbed by his teammates.
Nedeljkovic’s empty-netter came at 17:18 in the third period, capping a five-goal effort for the Penguins, who beat the Sabers 5-2.
The Penguins goaltender recorded his pass earlier in the game when he served forward Cody Glass in the second period.
Nedeljkovic also became the second goaltender in Penguins history to score a goal, with Tristan Jarry being the first to do so last season.
Only 16 goalies have lit the lamp in NHL history, for a total of only 19 goals.
The last goalie goal came from Wild netminder Filip Gustavsson earlier this season in an October game against the Blues.
Nedeljkovic’s goal marks the first time multiple goalkeepers have scored in the same season.
Longtime Devils star Martin Brodeur is the all-time leader in goals scored by a goaltender, with the Hall of Famer accomplishing the feat three times in his career 22 years in the NHL.
