‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie Greenlit by Netflix With Cllian Murphy to Star and Produce

EXCLUSIVE: It took a while, amid reports that were never fully confirmed, but the Shelby family faithful can now fully rejoice in the news. Peaky Blinders the film is officially moving forward. Netflix has given the green light to a feature film that will star Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy in a return to the iconic role of Birmingham clan leader Tommy Shelby.

Tom Harper (Stone heart, The aeronauts, War and peace) is directing the untitled film. Harper is no stranger to woozyafter directing the second half of season 1.

Production is expected to begin later this year from a script of woozy creator Steven Knight. Producers are Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason. The feature film will be made in association with BBC Film.

Knight said Birmingham World in March, the film was moving forward with Murphy on board; he also previously told Deadline that a movie was coming. However, this is the first official confirmation with the green light from the studio.

Plot details and further casting are being kept under wraps, although Knight previously told Deadline that the film’s story will be set during World War II.

Today, Murphy told Deadline: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t done with me. …It’s very rewarding to collaborate again with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.

Harper said: “When I first realized Peaky Blinders More than 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the show would become, but we knew there was something about the chemistry of the casting and writing that felt explosive. woozy has always been a family story – and so it’s incredibly exciting to reunite with Steve and Cillian to bring the film to audiences around the world on Netflix.

Knight added: “I’m really excited that this movie is about to happen. This will be an explosive chapter of the Peaky Blinders history. Without taboo. Complete on Peaky Blinders in war.”

A global phenomenon, woozy began airing in 2013 on BBC Two in the United Kingdom, and Netflix joined the fray in 2014. The series moved from BBC Two to BBC One in 2019 after its fourth season won the BAFTA for Best Drama. In total, the series ran for six seasons, culminating in 2022.

Back in the day, Murphy’s Tommy settled many scores, including killing his cousin Michael (Finn Cole), and rode off into the sunset on a white horse after handing over the reins of the family business to his sister Ada (Sophie Rundle).

Before winning the Oscar for best actor for Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer in March, a busy Murphy starred in and produced Little things like these, which opened this year’s Berlin Film Festival. At the same time, he launched his production company Big Things Films with Alan Moloney. It is currently running Stevebased on the book Shy by Max Porter that Murphy and Moloney are producing under Big Things for Netflix.

He also recently signed for Blood flows from coalbased on Mark A. Bradley’s book about the murder of union leader Joseph Yablonski, who Oppenheimer Universal studio acquired as a preventative measure.

Murphy is repped by CAA, Lou Coulson Associates, David Weber and Main Stage PR; Harper is with Josh Varney at 42 and Rob Carlson at UTA.
