Paul Schrader addressed the allegations of sexual assault and the allegations of detailed harassment in the trial of his former assistant, calling his allegations “sensational, misleading and false”. The 26-year-old woman continued Schrader on April 3 to enforce a regulation which she declared that the director had retained, in order to resolve the assault and the harassment she claimed to have taken place for him between 2021 and 2024. Schrader’s lawyer previously refused his claims, but the filmmaker himself speculated on his engines of the accuser. “I write because you are important to me and I want you to hear directly on this subject,” wrote Schrader. The list of more than 50 recipients seems to include many film and writers criticisms, as well as directors like Sofia Coppola and Alex Ross Perry as well as American psycho Bret author Easton Ellis.
Schrader accused his ex-assistant of seeking “a seizure of rapid money” by continuing to enforce the regulations and not for sexual assault. “The trial is working to create a false impression on my character and my interactions with her,” he wrote. “He also rewrites the story, in a desperate attempt to transform our relationship of more than three years, which consisted of diligent work and with a very disposed non -sexual company, in something not welcome, coercive and odious for her. Nothing could be further from the truth. ” Schrader said that he “had never had sex in any form” with the assistant, adding: “I have never tried such a thing – period”. The assistant had not accused Schrader of having had sex with her, but rather “catch her and embrace her by force” in her hotel room and try to prevent him from leaving. Schrader also denied having exposed himself to her, which his assistant said that he had done three days after the alleged assault. Schrader said he kissed her twice, and after “indicating dissatisfaction” the second time, he apologized and “never tried to kiss him again”. In the trial, the assistant cited emails where Schrader wrote that she was “uncomfortable with my affection for you” and “fear of touching you”.
Schrader’s letter continued to say that the “grievances” of his former assistant appeared after having reduced his workload and paid after finishing his film Oh, Canada Last summer. He closed by declaring that there is “nothing to hide in my conduct”.
