Patriots star Christian Barmore out indefinitely after coach’s discovery leads to blood clot diagnosis

The New England Patriots announced that defensive tackle Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend and is currently being treated at Mass General Brigham Hospital.

The diagnosis leaves Barmore, the team’s second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, out indefinitely.

“Our primary concern at this time is the health and well-being of Christian,” the Patriots said in a statement. “Fortunately, Brigham General Hospital in Massachusetts provides some of the best health care in the world.”

“While there is no specific timetable for his return, we know that Christian is receiving excellent care and we look forward to his full recovery.”

It was a medical situation that could have been much more serious, as Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, told X, saying she was grateful to Patriots head coach Jim Whalen.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Patriots coach Jim Whalen for his diligence and absolute care over the last two days,” Lynn posted on X. “Today could have been a lot different without Jim’s persistence and expertise.”

NFL Network reported that Barmore had a bruise on the back of his calf that he “thought was insignificant,” but Whalen insisted he checked it to make sure that was indeed not the case.

“If this had not been addressed, it could have been worse for Christian Barmore,” Ian Rapoport said Sunday.

Barmore, who turned 25 on July 28, had a breakout third season with the Patriots in 2023, recording a career-high 8.5 sacks and 64 combined tackles in 17 games (six starts).

That’s what led the Patriots to sign him to a four-year extension worth up to $92 million, with $41.8 million guaranteed at signing before he begins the final year of his rookie contract.

Barmore was supposed to start this year, but as the Patriots said in their statement, football is the least of their concerns right now.

The team has already had to deal with a player who suffered from blood clots. Center David Andrews, a longtime veteran of the organization, was diagnosed with clots in his lungs in 2019. Andrews eventually returned to play in 2020, and he remains with the team today as he enters his 10th season.
