Patriots defensive lineman Christian Barmore has been diagnosed with blood clots and has no timetable for his return, the team announced Sunday.

“Over the weekend, Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots,” the team’s statement read. “He was treated appropriately by the physicians at Mass General Brigham, who tested, evaluated and treated Christian.”

“Our primary concern at this time is Christian’s health and well-being. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham offers some of the best health care in the world. While there is no timetable for his return, we know Christian is receiving excellent care and we look forward to his full recovery.”

Barmore missed practice Friday and Sunday after being limited to Thursday’s training due to illness.

Sunday was Barmore’s 25th birthday.

Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, responded to the Patriots’ announcement with the following message:

“I would be remiss if I did not thank Patriots coach Jim Whalen for his absolute diligence and attention over the last two days,” Lynn wrote. “Today could have been much different without Jim’s persistence and expertise.”

ESPN’s Mike Reiss noted that blood clots caused Patriots offensive lineman David Andrews to miss the 2019 season.

Barmore, entering his fourth season, signed a four-year contract extension worth up to $92 million in the offseason.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive lineman had a breakout season last year, totaling 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He played in all 17 games in two of his three seasons with the Patriots.

His absence will be a blow to the Patriots’ defense, which was one of the best at containing the run last season.

The Patriots recently signed defensive tackle Josiah Bronson, who wore No. 75 in practice Sunday.

Barmore and Davon Godchaux started every game on the defensive line last season. Backups include Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Armon Watts, Trysten Hill, Daniel Ekuale and Sam Roberts.
