Patrick Mahomes reveals the only thing that will stop him in his quest to beat Tom Brady’s seven Super Bowl victories with the Chiefs… and opens up about his dream of joining the Kansas City Royals MLB team for the spring training!

Patrick Mahomes has revealed he would love to play as long as Tom Brady – but the Chiefs quarterback insists he will never let his NFL career come between him and his responsibilities as a father.

Brady spent 23 years in the league, winning seven Super Bowls, before ending his career last year.

The former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback is now 46, but Brady admitted this week that he would “never be opposed” to coming out of retirement.

Mahomes won the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times at the age of 28, having recently led Kansas City to a second straight championship in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs quarterback has two young children with his wife Brittany – daughter Sterling (three) and Patrick “Bronze”, who will celebrate his second birthday in November.

Mahomes told TIME that he would love to play beyond 40, but that he wouldn’t sacrifice time with his children just to extend his career.

“I looked, if I played until Tom (Brady)’s age, my daughter would be 19, 20,” he said. “This would mean missing many youth sporting events and other commitments.”

He added: “I would love to play that long…at the same time, I want to be there for my daughter. If I can do it, I will continue to play. But if I feel like it’s taking away time from my family, that’s when I’ll know it’s time to leave.

Mahomes also insists that Brady normalized the abnormal by enjoying such success into his 40s.

“Tom warped people’s brains about how difficult it was to do this because of the way he took care of his body,” Chiefs Staircase said. “So I’m about to make sure I get rid of that dad body if I want to play until I’m 45.”

“I think I’ve done a great job so far. But it’s hard to remember what Tom did,” Mahomes said.

The victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas made Mahomes become only the fifth quarterback in NFL history to win at least three Super Bowls.

He now sits alongside Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Troy Aikman. But the 28-year-old insists he is “far from being” the greatest of all time (GOAT). He will only initiate the discussion after the end of his career.

“You have to build a consistent career,” he said. “You see that in any sport. I had an excellent journey. I think I’ve done a great job so far. But it’s hard to remember what Tom did for so long, what Peyton Manning did or Aaron Rodgers.

“There are so many guys, they’ve been at such a high level for so long. To be in this conversation, you have to do it on an annual basis. You can’t take for granted that you’ve done it the last year.

Mahomes climbed to the top of football after turning his back on a baseball career. The quarterback’s father was a pitcher for teams like the Red Sox and Cubs. Mahomes Jr was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 but did not sign a contract.

These days, Mahomes is a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, who play next to Arrowhead Stadium. The 28-year-old has no plans to juggle his baseball and football careers, nor does he intend to follow Michael Jordan’s example and move from one sport to the other.

But he has spoken to the MLB team about the possibility of one day joining practice. “If I can maybe get in some spring training, I’m not opposed to that,” he said.

“I’m going to get it approved by the chiefs and everything else. But maybe one of these years I’ll go over there and see what I’ve got. See if I can still hit the ball or throw or anything. Maybe not in games but I can at least practice with them.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid joked that he would be happy for Mahomes to take over on one condition: “He should take me on as his manager,” he told TIME.
