Patrick Mahomes Celebrates Making Kansas City Chiefs History With Some Fashion Tips For Isiah Likely After Touchdown Controversy

There was something very different about the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Baltimore Ravens, but also something strangely familiar.

Patrick Mahomes was making history again, Taylor Swift was attending her first NFL season opener and their opponents still couldn’t conquer the two-time defending champions.

Leading 27-20, the Chiefs somehow survived a Ravens drive down the field that put them within striking distance of a victory.

Baltimore and quarterback Lamar Jackson have struggled to find a way past Mahomes, losing four of five meetings — including last season’s AFC Championship Game.

With the opportunity for a rare victory in front of them, Baltimore appeared to have misfired in recent games.

However, Jackson found tight end Isaiah Likely in the end zone for a touchdown that was awarded by the officials, only to be overturned upon review.

Likely’s toe was considered just out of bounds, so rather than being down one point and having a chance to score a game-tying field goal, or a game-winning two-point conversion, the Ravens ran out of time and suffered another loss.

And Mahomes wasted no time reminding Likely, Baltimore and the NFL that the Chiefs don’t deserve a chance.

“He should wear white cleats next time, that’s my advice,” Mahomes smiled in his postgame press conference.

A smile ended his fashion advice, but he was also happy to have become the Chiefs’ all-time leading passer, passing the 84 yards needed to overtake Len Dawson – who played for the Chiefs from 1962 to 1975 – for first place. He did it on a 23-yard completion to Travis Kelce in the second quarter.

For the first time since dating Kelce, pop superstar Swift was in town for the Chiefs’ championship banner presentation ceremony.

As of early September 2023, the roadshow had yet to make a stop in the NFL, but 12 months later, its presence remains a good thing for Mahomes, Kelce and the rest of the team — if not for NFL fans.

Kansas City has now won 12 of the 15 games Swift has been in the back row, including the Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers that put them on track for the first-ever three-peat in NFL history.

His arrival in last season’s Week 3 win over the Chicago Bears sent NFL fans into a tizzy, and over the weeks, the emphasis broadcasters placed on his presence irritated fans.

There wasn’t much difference Thursday night, as Swift’s arrival — while her sold-out Eras Tour is on hiatus until November — provided social media with its chance to react.

And when the game was delayed 20 minutes due to weather, NBC’s decision to air an interview with Mahomes that spent much of its time talking about Swift, rather than a historic hat trick, drew widespread criticism from fans.

“It was nice of the league to delay (the game) 20 minutes so they could air an interview with Mahomes talking about Taylor Swift,” one fan posted on X.

While another added: “Why are we talking about Taylor Swift in a Patrick Mahomes interview on Thursday Night Football, ENOUGH please.”

Swift has always taken things lightly, stating last season that she didn’t care how her presence made “Brad and Chad” feel and that she had no control over where the TV cameras were pointed.

While she wasn’t seen alongside her best friend from last season, Brittany Mahomes, Swift enjoyed drinks in her suite, celebrated and hugged Kelce’s mom, Donna, and made sure there was time for her fans with a sweet interaction.

Swift’s arrivals have always seemed to include a nod to the Chiefs, and for the season opener, she paired her denim outfit with striking red knee-high boots — with her arrival posted by the NFL’s social media accounts.

The Chiefs welcomed Swift with open arms, his presence attracting a new wave of fans and in an interview with Front Office Sports before the season, the franchise outlined its plans.

“She wants to be a fan,” Chiefs president Mark Donovan said in an interview with Front Office Sports before the season began.

“This is her time off. She wants to be there to support Travis. We’re going to create this opportunity for her to do that.”

Last season started with a loss for the Chiefs, but engulfed by the Kelce-Swift romance, they found a way to turn things around and win a third Lombardi Trophy in five years.

They’re off to a flying start with a win in 2024, and Swift is here to watch history unfold from the start.
