Furious passengers on a £400-a-night Caledonian Sleeper train were unable to wash or go to the toilet in their compartments after being left without running water.

Passengers on the 8.30pm train from Inverness to London Euston on Friday evening only discovered the water supply problems when they boarded the “luxury” train.

Elderly guests could not shower and were forced to use the shared toilet “in a long corridor” for the duration of the 12-hour trip.

Ian Barratt, 81, from Maldon in Essex, who paid £800 for a return ticket, said he sat down for breakfast on Saturday morning “unwashed, unshaven and dirty” .

He told the Daily Record: “Embarrassed staff, willing and helpful as they were, suggested that passengers could use the few general toilets located on the express.

“But for some people it required a long journey along a narrow corridor on a train that is several hundred meters long.

“One passenger claimed to have suffered a similar fate on four previous trips.”

According to Mr Barratt, Caledonian Sleeper said they could “do nothing but hand out drums of spring water” because the only maintenance depot was in London.

He added: “One member of staff seemed surprised that I hadn’t been warned about the problem in advance, but the first I knew about it was when we were about to go up board the train at 8:30 a.m.

“This sort of situation is not what you would expect after paying over £800 for a return ticket. I think it was a management failure.

Other passengers have already denounced on social networks the lack of running water on board Caledonian Sleeper trains.

Sharon Lewis posted on Facebook on April 2: “We returned to the lounge for priority boarding and were then told (along with a couple from the room next door) that the amenities in our two double rooms (toilet, shower, sink) did not work because there was no water. water in the car because it had not been filled.

“Their offer – 33 percent refund on our ticket!! There was no discussion between you about getting a full refund for the lack of services and still being allowed to travel, which under the circumstances , would have been a fair compromise.

“We and the room next door ended up in a heated argument during which we ended up canceling our plans and staying in London for the night in a hastily booked hotel.”
