Charlotte, NC – The Carolina Panthers signed a major project to develop as a tight end on Monday.
Large as in 6 feet 8 inches and 245 pounds.
The former basketball player of Division I Colin Granger will start his trip to football after five years of university basketball at Ohio, west Caroline and Coastal Carolina this season.
Because he is withdrawn from five years from the school, he was available to sign as a free agent. He was eligible to be written by any team last year.
He will participate in playing time with Tommy Tremble, Ja’tavion Sanders, Jordan Matthews, James Mitchell and Dominique Dafney.
This is not the first time that the coach of the Caroline Dave Canales and the director general Dan Morgan are part of an experience with a former basketball player. The two were in Seattle when the Seahawks signed the former basketball and football player west of Kentucky George Fant (6-5, 315 pounds) to be a hybrid tackle / a tight end.
Fant played seven seasons with Seattle, the New York Jets and the Houston Texans. Fant worked with Granger and spoke to the panthers of him.
The difference is that Granger has not played football since the eighth year.
The Panthers hope that Granger will follow in the footsteps of Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and others who have gone from university basketball to NFL as tight buns.
