Pakistan bans 100 social media accounts for promoting ‘anti-state’ content

Pakistan has blocked up to 100 social media accounts for spreading sectarian, anti-state, terrorist and anti-Islamic messages.
The Federal Investigation Agency blocked 106 social media accounts on platforms including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, police said. Dawn.
This measure was taken in response to the findings of the Provisional Violent Extremism Unit (PVE) of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the capital police.

So far, the unit has authorized the blocking of a total number of 203 accounts, including 164 on Twitter, 38 on Facebook and one on YouTube. Of these, 106 have already been blocked.
Pakistan’s counter-terrorism department has made several requests to the FIA for the closure of the accounts in question. They also provided the details of these accounts, along with screenshots of illegal activity.
According to a recent report by The Express Grandstandthe Pakistani government is currently working on a way to force social media platforms to register in Pakistan.
Pakistan People’s Party Senator Rubina Khalid said the government seemed powerless to address the issue of profanity and derogatory content on the internet.
She added that the issue had been raised several times at meetings of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and that it was up to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take action against such content.
Minister of State for Law and Justice Shahadat Awan responded that online hate speech against any religion would be blocked immediately.
