Padres Activate Xander Bogaerts – MLB Trade Rumors

The Padres reinstated Xander Bogaerts from the 10-day injured list for tonight’s series opener against the Braves. San Diego also recalled Sean Reynolds for his MLB debut, a move that was first announced this afternoon. In corresponding moves, the Padres placed the reliever Wandy Peralta on the 15-day IL (retroactive to July 10) with adductor strain and optional receiver Brett Sullivan.

Bogaerts’ return was one of the most notable changes of the night. He’s been out since late May after breaking his left shoulder. Some initially thought the four-time All-Star could be out until August. He recovered fairly quickly, returning to the big leagues in about seven weeks. Bogaerts made two rehab appearances in Low-A and appeared in four games with Triple-A El Paso.

Captain Mike Shildt has Bogaerts at second base and fifth in the batting order. The Padres are hoping for much better production than he’s managed to produce through the first six weeks of the season. Bogaerts started with a .219/.265/.316 average in 200 plate appearances. It would easily be the worst year of his career if he continued at that pace, but he’s just a year removed from a solid .285/.350/.440 performance.

After Bogaerts’ injury, Jake Cronenworth slid to second base. He’s back at first base tonight and should spend most of his time there going forward. That’s going to get some movement going Luis Arraez return to designated hitter most nights and contribute to available playing time for Donovan Solano. That’s not a reflection of his performance. Since the Friars signed Solano to a minor league contract on May 5, he’s hitting .286/.345/.398 in 177 plate appearances. The Colombia native has been an average or better hitter on a strikeout basis over the past six seasons with the Giants, Reds, Twins and Padres.

As for Peralta, he’ll miss at least the next two weeks. A surprising four-year deal last season, he has a 4.50 ERA in 41 appearances. Peralta has a typical 53.2% hitting percentage, but he’s had trouble when opponents have managed to elevate the ball. He’s giving up home runs at a high rate of 1.59 per nine innings.
