In order to vote in the final in the Oscar race, the members of the Academy are now required to watch each film nominated in a category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the news on Monday, as well as other updates of the rules for the 2026 Oscars.
So far, it was a requirement for appointments in specialty categories, such as documentary functionality and international functionality. But the members who voted in all other categories were on the honor system – encouraged, but not compulsory, to watch all the nominated films and performance for which they vote in the last lap.
The organization says that it was monitoring whether or not its members consult nominated films in its private online projection room. In the future, members will have to submit a form indicating if they have seen films “elsewhere”, as in a film festival or a private event, before they can vote for the finalists.


The Academy has also shared new information on its approach to artificial intelligence in the cinema – an increasingly hot subject in Hollywood, where AI played a major role in labor negotiations during the strikes of writers and actors of 2023. In the future, generative AI and other digital tools “contributes neither to the chances of obtaining a nomination. “The academy and each branch will judge success, taking into account the measure in which a human was at the heart of creative fatherhood when choosing the film to be attributed.”

In its new regulations, the Academy has also opened more possibilities for filmmakers who are refugees or who have asylum status in the countries from which the films are subjected. A new rule stipulates that to be eligible for consideration in the category of long international films, countries will now have to confirm that “creative control of the film was largely in the hands of citizens, residents or people with refugee or asylum status in the country of submission”.
For the first time, casting directors will obtain their own Oscars statuettes in the 2026 Oscars. They are required to subject “the written descriptions of the unique casting process to their films” and include “a photo grid of the distribution and / or the full list of actors”.
The Oscars of next year will take place on March 15, 2026, organized by the actor Conan O’Brien and Broadcast Live on ABC.
