The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the creation of an Oscar of Cascades design, which will first be presented at the 100th Oscars. The Oscar will honor films released in 2027 during the 2028 ceremony.
“Since the first days of cinema, the stuntman’s design has been an integral part of the cinema,” said the CEO of the Academy Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a press release. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and their dedication to reach this important opportunity.”
The category rules for eligibility and the vote for the inaugural price will be announced in 2027 as part of the rules of the 100th Oscars. The details of the presentation of the price – as if there will be nominees or not just an announced winner – will be determined by the Council of Governors of the Academy and executive leaders on a future date.
To date, only two stuntmen have received statuettes with Oscars, both honorary prizes: Yakima Canuttin 1966, and Hal NeedhamIn 2012. There are now more than 100 cascade professionals who are currently members of the Academy’s production and technology branch. Most have been invited to join the organization in recent years while Momentum grew to recognize their business sector.

The latest new price category created by the Academy was the realization in the casting. This price was drawn up in 2024 and will be awarded for the first time to – or before – the 98th Academy Awards, recognizing films released in 2025 during the 2026 award ceremony.
