Oscar nominations postponed due to wildfires

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences once again postponed the announcement of his nomination in response to the fires still raging in Los Angeles. It also canceled its annual luncheon, which was scheduled to take place on February 10.

The organization that hosts the Oscars announced Monday that it would once again extend the voting period, this time until Friday. Nominations will now be announced on January 23 at 5:30 a.m. PT. The nominations were initially due to be revealed on Friday, but the academy announced last week an initial delay of a few days.

“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses suffered by so many in our community,” academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a statement.

“Due to the ongoing fires in the Los Angeles area, we believe it is necessary to extend our voting period and move up the date of our nomination announcement to allow more time for our members,” continued the press release.

The academy luncheon, where the annual class photos of the year’s nominees are taken, will be canceled for the second time since it was implemented in 1982. (The first time was in 2020, due to the pandemic.) scheduled for February 18, will be postponed to a later date as yet undetermined.

Additionally, read the statement: “As we want to be sensitive to the region’s infrastructure and accommodation needs over the coming weeks, it is imperative that we make some changes to our events calendar, which we believe we believe, will benefit from the support of our industry.

The Oscars telecast will still take place on March 2.

The academy added that it looked forward to “honoring our frontline workers who contributed to the fires, recognizing those affected, and encouraging people to join the academy in supporting relief efforts.”
