Artillery Factory Day is observed in India on March 18 every year to commemorate the founding of colonial India’s first artillery factory near Kolkata in 1801.
The day begins with the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem at various events across India in recognition of the service of the Ordnance Factories Board (OFB).
Indian Ammunition Factories, Ministry of Defense observes the day to highlight the research, development and production capabilities of ammunition factories for firearms and ammunition.
History of OFB and significance of the day
The Ordnance Factories Board was founded in 1775 and today has 41 ordnance factories, nine training institutes, three regional marketing centers and five regional safety controllers, spread across India.
The origin of artillery manufacturers dates back to colonial times.
In 1775, the East India Company established a Board of Ordnance in Kolkata, to extend its economic and political power in the country. A gunpowder factory was established at Ishapore in 1787, which began production in 1791.
They also established a gun transport agency in 1801 in Kolkata, which started production on March 18, 1802. These were the first industrial ammunition factories in India, which are still operating today.
After Indian independence, another 21 munitions factories were built.
Thus, the Ordnance Factory Day was created to commemorate and recognize the commitment of OFBs in the defense sector and the development of the country.
Besides the hoisting of the national flag at various munitions factories, several events are planned for the day by the government. Functions around the presentation of firearms, ammunition, rifles, artillery and other military equipment are organized in different centers. A procession is organized as well as the presentation of weapons and ammunition.
These events are open to the public.
