OpenAI to remove Scarlett Johansson-like voice from ChatGPT

OpenAI is removing one of the voices used by ChatGPT after users discovered she sounded like Scarlett Johansson, the company announced Monday. The voice, called Sky, is now paused after OpenAI used it when demonstrating its new GPT-4o model last week.

“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately imitate the distinctive voice of a celebrity: Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to another professional actress using her own natural voice,” the company wrote in a blog post. “To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talent.”

A video of the demo made the rounds on social media last week, with users finding the voice similar to Johansson’s. Some mocked the voice for being too flirtatious, while others compared it to a male fantasy.

The seductive voice has drawn comparisons to the 2013 film “Her,” in which Johansson plays a sultry virtual assistant. The main character of the film, played by Joaquin Phoenix, ends up falling in love with the virtual assistant.

Although the company did not compare Sky’s voice to Johansson’s, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted the word “She” following the company’s event.

The demo aimed to showcase the chatbot’s enhanced conversational capabilities, but went viral after the sultry voice laughed at almost everything an OpenAI employee said. At one point, the chatbot said to the employee, “Wow, that’s quite an outfit you’re wearing.” » At another point, the chatbot said, “Stop, you’re making me blush” after receiving a compliment.

In its blog post, OpenAI says it wants its chatbot’s voices to sound “accessible” and “inspire confidence.” He also wants them to have a “warm, engaging, confidence-inspiring and charismatic voice.”

In the future, OpenAI says it plans to “introduce additional voices to ChatGPT to better meet diverse user interests and preferences.”
