Everyone is speculating about today’s OpenAI event. Many believed the company would announce a search engine powered by ChatGPT. Others thought the company might announce a new open source language model for its popular ChatGPT service. OpenAI’s Sam Altman put those rumors to rest with an article on X.
Altman posted on Xstating that the focus of the event is “not gpt-5, nor a search engine, but we’ve been working hard on some new things that we think people will love!”
It “seems magical to me. Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time,” he said to end the message.
Updated May 13: Apple is reportedly close to reaching a deal with OpenAI “to use ChatGPT features in Apple’s iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone operating system.”
Of course, this just means that OpenAI won’t launch an AI-powered search engine today. There’s still a good chance the company could roll out a search tool at some point. Companies like Perplexity are strongly pushing AI research. Search leader Google is experimenting with AI results in the main search feed through Search Generative Experience (SGE).
If OpenAI were to roll out a search engine at some point, there could be substantial benefits. “The major benefit of combining a platform like ChatGPT with web crawler-based search is that it allows the language model to act as your own personal search guru – not just for you find the information, but also to present it in a way that is easy to understand and use,” our AI expert Ryan Morrison wrote in his overview of the OpenAI research.
Morrison also noted that OpenAI faces an uphill battle to beat Google in search. “To beat Google at its own game, OpenAI has a bit of a fight as Google itself is working on integrating LLM-based analytics into its search results,” he wrote.
What else could OpenAI be working on if it’s not a search announcement? Morrison posted a few speculation about “Possible small open source language model, GPT-4 coming to ChatGPT for free, data limit update in ChatGPT, and could still see improved web search in ChatGPT.” If any of these are correct, this could still be a very exciting event for OpenAI and its fans.
Luckily, we just have to wait a little longer, because we can catch the event on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET). As is OpenAI tradition, this will happen just before Google I/O kicks off on May 14.
