Coco Gauff won the first simple title of the French Open in his career by retaliation to beat the world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a final of roller coaster played in test conditions.
The second American seeded Gauff won a 6-7 victory (5-7) 6-2 6-4 after a tense battle between the two main players of the WTA tour.
It is the second victory of the Grand Chelem in the 21 -year -old career, adding to the US Open title that it won in 2023, also by beating the Bélarus Sabalenka.
GAUFF has recovered from a difficult start where she dragged through a double break, finally finding her rhythm and benefiting from a large number of errors from Sabalenka, 27 years old.
“It hurts so much. Congratulations to Coco – she was a better player than me,” said Sabalenka, who also submitted to her first title by Roland Garros.
A stiff breeze has wreaked havoc with service in the first two sets, leading to the pair exchanging 12 breaks in an entertaining if not high quality case.
Gauff, who lost in the 2022 final, settled faster in the third decisive set to break up and kept his nerve to win.
She had to survive another breaking point before winning her second match point, falling on the clay on her back when Sabalenka pushed a head to hand.
With his parents Candi and Corey dancing euphoria in the stands, Gauff shared an affectionate hug with Sabalenka before running outside the field to celebrate with his family.
