A new study has found that residents of Massachusetts pay the second most in healthcare costs nationwide.

The analysis comes from NiceRx, a company that helps people hook up with prescription drugs for a fixed price each month.

The company determined that Massachusetts residents pay $10,559 per person per year for healthcare costs. It’s second only to Alaska, where residents pay $11,064 per person.

Despite recent legislation aimed at reducing health care costs, health insurance for a family of four in Massachusetts costs an average of $22,000, according to the study.

The costs for Alaskans are so high because of the state’s small population and its isolation from the rest of the country, NiceRx said. This creates limited competition between health care providers and therefore higher costs.

Delaware ranked third on the list, with an average annual health care cost of $10,254 per person. This is due to a lack of competition resulting from the consolidation of hospitals and healthcare systems in the state, NiceRx said.

Utah was found to be the cheapest state for health care, with residents paying an average of $5,982.

The study also looked at how much people in each state pay for particular prescription drugs. Massachusetts also ranked second on this list. Bay State residents pay an average of $268.21 per prescription, NiceRx found.

Rhode Island tops the list, with residents paying an average of $288.37 per prescription. Maine residents paid the lowest per prescription nationwide, an average of $22.39 per prescription.
