I’m trying to think of a holiday metaphor. Maybe Krampus? Is this like Krampus?
It appears Nintendo is starting to restrict the Wii U and 3DS’ ability to play online sooner than expected (via Nintendo Life).
The possible shutdown was first reported by Jonathan Barrow of Pretendo, an “open source replacement for the Nintendo Network” with the aim of preserving online functionality for both platforms in question. Barrow’s findings highlight recent difficulties gamers are experiencing getting Wii U and 3DS games online, part of a “slow rollout” of Nintendo’s plans to discontinue the services.
Last October, Nintendo announced that online services for the Wii U and 3DS systems would end in early April 2024. This was to be the next step toward shipping the old home console and handheld well -loved on the farm after their respective digital release. the windows were closed in March 2023.
“Please note that if an event occurs that would make it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software, we may have to discontinue services sooner than planned,” the company said in an official statement to the time, which could explain the events we are witnessing at the moment.
Polygon tested the issue by trying to take a digital copy of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS online, only to receive an error code previously assigned to the Pokémon Bank application. A quick scan of social media showed that users were experiencing unsolvable connectivity issues with the same error code on several different 3DS games, including Pokémon Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon, Yo-kai Watch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force HeroesAnd Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Polygon has contacted Nintendo for more information and will update this story if we know more. Whether this is a concerted effort on Nintendo’s part to hammer the final nail into the coffins of the Wii U and 3DS or a symptom of another problem, it’s clear that gamers have no problem only a limited time to enjoy online gaming on these two systems. If you fancy another ride from the latest generation Super Smash Bros. games while enjoying the holidays, you should get started on it as soon as possible.
