Original article, February 12, 2024 (8:47 a.m. ET): The OnePlus 12R looks like one of the best mid-range phones of 2024, but it turns out the phone isn’t as good as OnePlus initially announced in one area.
OnePlus has claimed that some variants of the OnePlus 12R will come with UFS 4.0 storage. This is a newer storage standard that offers faster speeds than UFS 3.1. Specifically, the company said that the 128GB model will feature UFS 3.1 storage and the 256GB variant will offer UFS 4.0 storage.
Unfortunately, OnePlus has now backtracked on these claims and said that all storage variants come with UFS 3.1 storage. Check out the screenshots below, showing the old archived list on the left and the new list on the right.
“I’m writing to you today to let you know that we made an error in our communications for the OnePlus 12R and to explain what will happen next,” wrote OnePlus President Kinder Liu on the OnePlus 12R forum. OnePlus community.
“Due to an error, we indicated that Trinity Engine-enhanced storage would be UFS 4.0 in some variants. I can now confirm that the storage in all variants of the OnePlus 12R is still enhanced by Trinity Engine but is actually UFS 3.1.
The Trinity Engine refers to a suite of software technologies to maintain storage, RAM, and multitasking performance over time.
What do you think about OnePlus’ storage error with the OnePlus 12R?
“On behalf of our team, I would like to apologize to everyone for this error,” Liu noted while adding that consumers who purchased or pre-ordered a OnePlus 12R can contact customer service.
It’s not the biggest mistake in the world (it’s not very promising OLED and giving you an LCD screen), but it’s still a notable mistake on the part of the brand that misled customers . After all, UFS 4.0 storage is usually limited to flagship phones. This is also disappointing given that the OnePlus Ace 3 – which is actually the OnePlus 12R in China – is listed with UFS 4.0 storage in all variants.
We asked OnePlus if customers who purchased the 256GB OnePlus 12R could get a refund this way. We’ve also asked OnePlus to confirm the storage specs of the Ace 3. We’ll update the article if/when it reaches us.
