‘One of Them Days’ Beats ‘Mufasa’ to No. 1 at Weekend Box Office

One of these daysyour day has come.

The Keke Palmer/SZA buddy comedy narrowly won out over the live-action Disney prequel. Mufasa: The Lion King at the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend box office. The Sony Pictures film, produced by Issa Rae and written by Syreeta Singleton (Damn rap!), opened to $11.6 million and is expected to reach $14 million by the end of the four-day weekend. Barry Jenkins’ big pivot into studio franchise filmmaking came in a close second, at $11.5 million, even anticipating $12 million for the full holiday.

While the triumph of an original buddy comedy starring, written and produced by black women is certainly something to celebrate, the overall box office picture this weekend is bleak. MLK weekend is traditionally considered the official start of the movie year, with expected totals around $150 million. The total for 2025 is estimated at around $77 million.

not even WolfmanBlumhouse and Universal’s upcoming reimagining of a classic era monster post-2020s The invisible mancould scare a decent weekend return. The shock film directed by Leigh Whannell, starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, came third with just $10.5 million. Compare that to the $28 million that The invisible man won during its first weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3in its fifth week in theaters like Moufasarounds out the top 5. The sneaker speedster earned $8.6 million, for a cumulative domestic total of $216.5 million. While Moufasa may have gained the advantage this weekend, cumulatively, he is falling behind Sonic with a domestic total of $206 million. In fifth place is Den of Thieves 2: Panterawhich adds $6.6 million this weekend for a cumulative domestic gross of $26 million.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of familiar faces, with the most recent titles already in their fourth week of release. In sixth and seventh places are Moana 2 And Nosferatuin their eighth and fourth weeks of release with $6 million and $4.3 million in weekend revenue, respectively. Next comes the Bob Dylan biopic A complete stranger in eighth position, with $3.8 million; the Broadway adaptation Wickedwith $3.5 (not bad for a film in its ninth week of release); A24’s erotic drama Little girlwith 2 million dollars (not bad for a provocative independent on half the screens like the rest of his competition).

This weekend’s global and international box office reports tell very different stories, even if they aren’t much sunnier.

The films with the best national accumulations occupy the first two places in the world and international rankings this weekend. Moufasa largely maintains its lead by grossing $20.3 million internationally and $31.8 million worldwide, representing a $382 million international gross and $588 million cumulative worldwide gross . Sonicmeanwhile, earned $15.2 million internationally and $23.8 million globally, bringing his cumulative total to $203.5 million internationally and $420 million globally .

One of these days managed to maintain its position in the international and worldwide charts, but failed to make the top 5 with its $11.6 million gross. This is extremely impressive considering he only played in one territory (compared to Nosferatu in 66 different markets). He was beaten out of the first places by Wolfman at No. 3, with $4.8 million internationally and $15.4 million worldwide; Moana 2 ($8 million internationally, $14 million worldwide); And Nosferatu ($7.6 million international, $12 million worldwide).

There is no doubt about the current world champion. Moana 2 currently boasts $567 million at the international box office, and globally, the sequel to Disney’s Polynesian island-hopping adventure crossed the billion-dollar mark this weekend, with 1.01 billion dollars.

Dive into weekend premieres at the global and international box office that didn’t make the top 10, and some interesting stories emerge. Paddington in Peruwhich only opens in the United States on Valentine’s Day, earned $6.2 million in 34 markets, including 23 new ones. Its international box office currently stands at $72.8 million, representing a stronger global opening than 2017. Paddington 2.

A complete stranger debuted at No. 11 in the U.K. over the weekend, bringing its worldwide cumulative total to $60.5 million, a pretty high number for a music biopic. Finally, Cannes winner and Oscar nominee Sean Baker Anora opened across Latin America this weekend, grossing $0.6 million, bringing its cumulative haul to $11.1 million. That may not sound like much, but it outperforms comparable indie films like Licorice pizza, The Squareand even Baker’s second feature film, The Florida Project.

No major release threatens the current dominance of Moufasa And Sonic 3 next weekend. But smaller scale films like One of these days We have reason to fear competition from titles like Steven Soderbergh’s haunted house film POV Presencethe spy thriller Legacyand Mel Gibson’s Mark Wahlberg, with Risk of theft.
