Zakariya Barbakh, thirteen, had spent most of his life for walking between the hospitals of Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Israel.
Born without a lung, he had struggled to breathe. Doctors had predicted that he would need transplant if he had to reach adulthood. But the last 15 months of war in Gaza had made this impossible.
When the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas entered into force on Sunday, Zakariya was ecstatic.
“Mom, now we can go get my lungs!” His mother remembers that he had said.
Less than 24 hours later, Zakariya was shot.
Doctors at Nasser Hospital say that an Israeli elite shooter shot the deadly shot on Monday in the southern city of Rafah. Zakariya’s family told CNN that it was looking for wood to use for cooking and heating.
“He has not died of his illness; He ended up dying in the hands of the occupation. All he wanted was to have lungs to breathe, what did he do to deserve this? What does this child do? Said his mother, unable to hold tears.
The Israeli army told CNN that it was not aware of the incident.
Zakariya is one of the four Palestinians at least shot down by the Israeli army since the cease-fire came into force.

Dallou knew the family because they had been moved by war at the same time. He went to get them under the rubble with other neighbors. Using the basic equipment and their bare hands, they were able to discover and recover the corpses of the mother and father, but the children remained missing.
Before abandoning, they heard the cries of a child and started to frantically throw blocks of cement until they reach the source.
After 30 minutes exhausting, they found a small hand tending their hands in the middle of the rubble and grabbing the air. They were able to remove the child – like that -, blurred and covered with dust – but alive. His little sister was found dead next to him.
Dallou and his sister Mawada have since taken her.

Dallou has children of age similar to As’Ad, which helped integrate it into their family. But he is concerned about the way As’ad will grow.

Mawada said that because she knew that As’ad’s mother, she would do everything she could to kiss her.
