One dead, one injured in shooting at vigil for Khyree Jackson and two other former college football players killed in car crash

BALTIMORE — A man is dead and a woman was hospitalized after a shooting Friday night outside Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, following a vigil for NFL rookie Khyree Jackson and two others who died in a car crash last weekend, police said.

After being found with gunshot wounds around 10 p.m., the man and woman were taken to a hospital where the man was pronounced dead, Prince George’s County police said. The woman’s injuries are not life-threatening, police added.

Officers were on duty outside the facility during the ceremony and began leaving once the vigil ended, Capt. Sukhjit Batth said in a Facebook Live video from the scene.

Shortly afterward, officers heard gunshots and returned to the school. Batth said people in the area were performing CPR on the woman. They flagged down officers when they arrived, and police then found a man who had also been shot, Batth said. Officers and citizens also attempted CPR on the man. Both were taken to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police added.

The department is now investigating what led to the shooting, Batth said.

Last Saturday, at approximately 3:14 a.m., officers responded to a crash in Upper Marlboro. After investigating, police learned that Cori Clingman, 23, of Upper Marlboro, was driving a silver Infiniti Q50 northbound on Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue when she attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed and struck a maroon Dodge Charger and a silver Chevrolet Impala. Police believe alcohol was a factor.

Jackson, 24, of Waldorf, and Isaiah Hazel, 23, of Upper Marlboro, were pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Lytton, Jr., 24, of Upper Marlboro, was pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center.

The men were remembered at a vigil at the high school earlier Friday night, according to a tweet from Wise Athletics.

Jackson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing cornerback at Alabama for two seasons and finishing his college career at Oregon.
