One dead, four injured; car flies off I-680/Hwy 242 split

CONCORD — One person died and four others were hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday morning after a car left a highway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 680 at State Route 242, according to reports confirmed Sunday by the CHP.

According to the CHP, the vehicle left the highway in an area where the interstate and interstate begin to divide. The consequences of the accident occurred off the highway and the highway lanes were open 20 minutes after the accident.

Authorities pronounced one person dead at the scene. The CHP said four other people involved in the crash were seriously injured.

It was unclear Sunday morning whether the vehicle that left the highway struck any other vehicles.

The CHP said it expects to receive more information later Sunday.
