On his 77-year relationship with his wife Rosalynn

Jimmy Carter was 3 years old and Rosalynn Smith was a baby when they first met.

They were the longest-serving presidential couple in history, married for 77 years until Rosalynn Carter’s death on November 19 at the age of 96.

“The best thing I ever did was marry Rosalynn,” the former president said in a 2015 interview with his nonprofit, The Carter Center, shared by C-SPAN. “This is the pinnacle of my life.”

“Even though we have faced extraordinary responsibilities and lived lives we could never have dreamed of, we are first and always Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter of Plains, Georgia,” Rosalynn wrote in her 1984 autobiography , “First Lady From Plains.”

In February 2023, Jimmy Carter, now 99, entered hospice care at their home in Plains, Georgia, where they have lived since 1962. The Carter Center announced in November that Rosalynn died at her home, surrounded friends, family and her husband.

Here’s a timeline of the Carters’ relationship.
