Olympic Wrestling Semi-Finals and Finals – Match Notes from Day 2

American Sarah Hildebrandt won her first two matches and will face Mongolian Otgonjargal Dolgorjav in the semifinals. The two have met at the last two World Championships, with Dolgorjav winning both times to reach the final.

Amit Elor will compete in the 68-kilogram final and hopes to become the third American to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s freestyle wrestling. She will face Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova in the final.

Cuban star Mijain Lopez, 41, is seeking his fifth Olympic gold medal when he takes on Chile’s Yasmani Acosta in the 130kg Greco-Roman wrestling final.

Semi finals

GR 77 kg: Nao Kusaka (Japan) against Malkhas Amoyan (Armenia), 3-1

First period: Kusaka scores first on a passivity. He attempts a reverse lift from the ground but does not score. Amoyan leads on criteria, 1-1, with a takedown a few seconds later.

Second period: Kusaka scores a takedown at the final whistle and leads 3-1. No goals for the rest of the match. Kusaka wins 3-1 and advances to the gold medal final.

GR 77 kg: Demeu Zhadrayev (Kazakhstan) against Sanan Suleymanov (Azerbaijan), 6-1

First period: Zhadrayev pushes his opponent during a neutral scrum in the opening seconds to take a 1-0 lead on a takedown. Zhadrayev adds a second point on a passivity then gets four points on a reverse lift from the par terre for a 6-0 lead with 1:20 left.

Second period: Suleymanov scores a passive point but does not score from the floor. Zhadrayev wins 6-1.

GR 97 kg: Artur Aleksanyan (Armenia) vs. Gabriel Rosillo (Cuba), 5-3

First period: Rossillo scores first on passivity and gets his chance over the top. Rosillo scores on a reverse lift, Aleksanyan scores a reversal then scores two spins. Aleksanyan leads 5-3 after being down 3-1.

Two points: no goals. Aleksanyan wins 5-3 and advances to the gold medal final.

GR 97 kg: Mohammadhadi Saravi (Iran) against Mohamed Gabr (Egypt), 6-0

First period: Savari used a two-on-one to secure the first point on a takedown. Saravi scores a second point on a passivity with a chance up top. Saravi tips Gabr into a chokehold to extend her lead to 4-0 with a minute left.

Second period: Saravi scores a takedown near the edge for a 6-0 lead. He holds the advantage for the rest of the period for a 6-0 victory and a spot in the gold medal final.

WFS 50 kg: Vinesh Phogat (India) against Yusneylis Guzman (Cuba), 5-0

First period: Guzman is extended on a couple of shots but Phogat defends. No points halfway through the period. Phogat scores first on a time clock violation. Guzman is on another shot but Phogat flattens it and the action returns to neutral. Phogat leads 1-0 at the break.

Second period: Phogat runs to the opposite side on a single-leg takedown for a takedown then scores two more points on an exhibition for a 5-0 lead with 1:20 remaining. No points for the rest of the match. Phogat will fight in the gold medal final after a huge loss to Yui Susaki.

WFS 50 kg: Sarah Hildebrandt (USA) over Otgonjargal Dolgorjav (Mongolia), 5-0

First period: Hildebrandt gets the first takedown on a snap down and a go-behind for a 2-0 lead in the first minute. Hildebrandt blocks a shot and gets another takedown for a 4-0 lead with six seconds left. Hildebrandt gets another point on a warning and another for a 5-0 lead at the break.

Second period: Dolgorjav comes close to scoring, but Hildebrandt counters to tie the game with 2:06 left. Dolgorjav tries a spin, but Hildebrandt counters to secure a 5-0 win and a spot in the gold medal game.

Medal matches

GR 77 kg Bronze – Zholaman Sharshenbekov (Kyrgyzstan) over Mehdi Mohsen Nejad (Iran), 3-1

First period: Passivity call against Nejad, which gives Sharshenbekov the first point and the shot on the ground. He scores twice in one round for a 3-0 lead.

Second period: Nejad scores a passive point but doesn’t get a par terre. Sharsthenbekov wins 3-1 and earns a bronze medal.

GR 77 kg Bronze – Se Ung Ri (North Korea) technically beat Raiber Rodriguez (Venezuela), 8-0

First period: Ri scores a takedown and three low guts for an 8-0 technical superiority and the bronze medal.

GR 77 kg Gold – Kenchiro Fumita (Japan) against Liguo Cao (China), 4-1

First period: Fumita scores first on a passivity call and adds two more on a wrench for a 3-0 lead.

Second period: Cao scores his first point on a passivity penalty with an opportunity up top but doesn’t get a turn. Fumita wins gold with a 4-1 victory after a lost challenge.

GR 130 kg Bronze – Amin Mirzazadeh (Iran) vs Sabah Shariati (Azerbaijan), 4-0

First period: Mirzazadeh scores on a passivity point then scores two more on a wrench for a 3-0 lead.

Second period: Mirzazadeh gets another passivity point but doesn’t get his turn for a 4-0 lead and eventual victory.

GR 130 kg Bronze – Lingzhe Meng (China) over Abdellatif Mohamed (Egypt), 5-2

First period: Mohamed scores first on a side step. Mohamed gets a second point on passivity.

Second period: Meng charged forward and scored a takedown for a 2-2 lead. Meng extended her lead to 3-2 on a step-out and then scored a second takedown seconds later for a 5-2 lead and the win.

GR 130 kg Gold – Mijain Lopez (Cuba) over Yasmani Acosta (Chile), 6-0

First period: Lopez gets the first point and scores a low blow for a 3-0 lead.

Second period: Lopez scores another passivity point for a 4-0 lead. Lopez gets a takedown for a 6-0 lead with 44 seconds left. He holds on to that lead to win his fifth Olympic gold medal.

WFS 68kg Bronze – Buse Cavusoglu Tosun (Turkey) vs Sol Gum Pak (North Korea), 4-2

First period: Tosun strikes first with a step back in the first 20 seconds. Pak is tied up but the referee blocks the decision and brings the action back to neutral. Pak attempts a slide at the end of the period but time runs out.

Second period: Pak has one leg and finishes with a takedown for a 2-1 lead. Tosun gets a step-out with a minute left but Pak leads 2-2 on criteria. Both wrestlers are in whizzer position with 30 seconds left but the position has been taken down. Tosun gets a takedown as time expires but North Korea doesn’t contest the call.

Bronze WFS 68 kg – Nonoka Ozaki (Japan) vs. Blessing Oborududu (Nigeria), 3-0

First period: Ozaki scores a takedown in the first minute for a 2-0 lead.

Second period: Ozaki hits a low single but Oborududu stops the shot and the action returns to neutral. Ozaki wins the bronze medal, 3-0.

WFS 68 kg Gold – Amit Elor (USA) over Meerim Zhumanazarova (Kyrgyzstan), 3-0

First period: Zhumanazarova goes on the activity clock with 1:29 left, but Elor scores a takedown and earns a penalty point for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Second period: Elor spent most of the second period using underhooks and two-on-ones. Elor won 3-0, becoming at age 20 the youngest Olympic wrestling champion in U.S. history and the third American woman to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal.
