“Giant”, a play on the anti -Semitism of Roald Dahl with John Lithgow as an author of the earthy, was one of the big winners of the Olivier Awards of this year, the British Tonys equivalent.
The play, which was staged at the Royal Court last year and was transferred to the West End on April 26, won three prizes during the Sunday ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London: the best actor, for Lithgow; Best support actor for Elliot Levey as a publisher trying to apologize to Dahl for his statements on the Jews; And the price of the best new coveted game.
For this final prize, “Giant” beat four other titles, including “The Years”, an acclaimed staging of a French life (with an abortion on the street and an end of life affair) which takes place at the Harold Pine Theater until April 19.
The success of “Giant” was perhaps not surprising given the amount of the criticisms rented in his opening race. Clive Davis, in the Times of London, said that the drama “subtle, intelligent and elegantly designed”, written by Mark Rosenblatt and directed by Nicholas Hytner, “deserves to transfer to a larger scene”. (Lithgow said in interviews that he wanted to take the play to Broadway.)
Houman Barekat, in a New York Times review, said that Lithgow was “superb as a besieged but unrepentant writer, mixing an affable and avuncular mind with scowling eyebrows, grumpy bite and nonchalant cruelty.
