An Oklahoma man has been charged with murdering his nine-month-old baby boy, 15 months after he was charged with assault for beating his pregnant girlfriend.

Hunter Smiley, 25, was previously arrested by police in January 2023 for beating the infant’s mother while she was still pregnant with their unborn son.

At the time, Smiley was charged with assault and battery against a pregnant woman.

He pleaded guilty to hitting the mother with pieces of a door he had broken during a fight after a night of drinking.

But murder charges were filed against Smiley following the death earlier this month of the couple’s baby boy, named Briggs.

The Newcastle Police Department was called to the home on April 10 after receiving a call about the baby who was unresponsive at the time.

The child was rushed to hospital with his life in danger.

Doctors discovered that the infant was suffering from internal brain bleeding and bleeding behind the eyes.

The baby died from his injuries two days later, on April 12.

Smiley was at the home when agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation showed up. Officers also found a weapon on Smiley when they arrived.

Smiley was arrested and booked into the McClain County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder on April 15.
