ATLANTA — The longest college football season in history ends Monday night in Atlanta as Notre Dame and Ohio State face off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Buckeyes (13-2) struggled in the College Football Playoff, winning their first two games in blowouts before a slight scare against Texas ended with Jack Sawyer rumbling 83 yards on a fumble return for securing a 28-14 victory. . The path to Notre-Dame was a little more difficult. The Fighting Irish were never threatened in the first round against Indiana and pulled away from SEC champion Georgia in the quarterfinals, but they had to recover from a 10-point deficit against Penn State to qualify for the program’s first national championship appearance since 2012.
There is no shortage of history and lore surrounding these two blue bloods, who have won 21 national titles during their history. Ohio State last won the title in 2014, the first iteration of the CFP. Notre Dame’s drought dates back to 1988 under coach Lou Holtz.
