ATLANTA – At the start of the 2024 season, the Ohio State The players and coaches aimed to participate in the national championship at the end of January. It was more of an expectation than a goal based on the talent the Buckeyes had on their roster.
Nearly five months later, Scarlet and Gray are here. On Monday night, Ohio State faces Notre Dame in the national championship game with a chance to be the last team standing in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. This comes after back-to-back resounding victories against Tennessee in the first round and Oregon in the quarter-finals at the Rose Bow. Last week, the Buckeyes won after a hard-fought match against Texas in the Cotton Bowl semi-finals.
The Fighting Irish also earned their spot in the national championship. After a one-loss regular season, Notre Dame held off its in-state foe Indiana 27-17 in the first round before getting busy Georgia 23-10 at the Sugar Bowl in the quarterfinals. The night before the Scarlet and Gray beat the Longhorns, the Irish scored a last-second field goal to defeat State of Pennsylvania 27-24.
It all comes down to a game between two of the most successful teams in college football history, with the winner taking home the sport’s ultimate prize.
