A new trailer for Paramount+’s next Star Trek adventure, Starfleet Academywas released on Saturday at New York Comic Con.
The video (watch it below) gives a deeper dive into the franchise’s first live-action drama series focused on Starfleet members in their early 20s. The company also revealed the show’s premiere date: January 15.
The show’s first trailer received a mixed reaction online (one YouTube wag dubbed it “TikTok Space Prom”). This new look dials back Gen Z emotion and ups the dramatic intensity — with a touch of apparent cadet sex and a hairy, furious Paul Giamatti (who plays a recurring alien villain on the show) included for good measure.
The series stars Holly Hunter as the Chancellor of the Academy and also features Robert Picardo reprising his role as the Doctor, and Tatiana Maslany (Black Orphan) as a recurring special guest in the first season. Academy stars Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner. Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.
The trailer comes at what appears to be a transitional moment for Paramount+ Hiking franchise, like previous shows Discovery, Star Trek: Picard and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks And Star Trek: Prodigy are all completed. Earlier this year, Paramount+ also announced that its popular flagship Hiking to show, Strange new worlds – which just returned for the third season – has been renewed for a fifth and final season. Other projects are also underway, but Academy is currently Paramount+’s best hope for the future of the franchise and attracting the next generation.
