Off-duty firefighters save man’s life during Pembroke hockey game

Local News

Duxbury Firefighter Scott Hill and Braintree Firefighter Brian Oriola performed CPR and revived the man, according to the Duxbury Fire Department.

Two off-duty firefighters saved the life of a man who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing hockey last week.

Duxbury firefighters Scott Hill and Brian Oriola of Braintree responded Wednesday night when they saw a player become unconscious during an adult hockey game at Hobomock Arena, the deputy fire chief said. Duxbury, Brian Monahan, in a Facebook post.

During a game on May 15, a man on the opposing team became unconscious and went into cardiac arrest, according to Monahan.

Hill and Oriola began performing CPR and resuscitated the man with an automated external defibrillator, the post said. The man was then transported to a local hospital.

“This positive result illustrates the importance of the American Heart Association’s ‘Chain of Survival,’” Monahan wrote. “The immediate call to 911, immediate CPR and use of an AED at the side all played an effective role in this case.”

Monahan praised Hill and Oriola for a “job well done.”
