Octavio Dotel, a former Chicago White Sox launcher, was one of the victims who died after the roof collapsed in a nightclub in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning, in several reports.
He was 51 years old.
Dotel was a relief from White Sox in 2008 and 2009 seasons as part of his MLB 15 -year career.
The New York dishes, which had signed Dotel in 1993, held a moment of silence for Dotel before Tuesday’s match against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field, during which they wrote “In Memoriam” on the dashboard. The Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (LIDOM) also paid tribute to Dotel on social networks, expressing “sorrow on (its) death”.
Officials initially declared that Dotel had been saved from debris and transported to a hospital, but the Satosky Terrero spokesman of Lidom confirmed to the Associated Press that Dotel died on Tuesday.
“After the authorities saved him alive from the nightclubs of the nightclub, the former MLB player and champion of the World Series Octavio Dotel was declared dead in the hospital,” wrote MLB Mike Rodriguez on social networks.
At least 79 people died and 160 were injured after the Jet Set nightclub collapse where a concert took place, officials said. Tony Blanco, who has played an MLB season and eight years professionally in Japan, also died as a result of the collapse, said Terrero.

The Dottel, born in Dominican, signed with the dishes as an amateur free agent in 1993 and made its MLB debut with them in 1999. It went 8-3 with an MPM of 5.38 in 19 appearances, including 14 departures, in 1999, its only season with the dishes before making it exchange at the Astros of Houston.
The right -hander launched for 13 teams, mainly as a lifter, during his MLB career from 15 years from 1999 to 2013 and recorded an MPM of 3.78 and 109 stops. He was a member of the Cardinals team of St. Louis who won the World Series in 2011.
Dotel signed with the White Sox as free agent before the 2008 season. In two seasons on the south side, he posted an MPM of 3.55 in 129 1/3 innings launched for a BWAR of 2.0. He then signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Free Agency after the 2009 season. In 2013, he launched in the Dominican Republic team which won the World Baseball Classic with a file of 8-0.
Nelsy Cruz, governor of the Dominican province of Monte Cristi, was also killed in Tuesday’s tragedy. His brother, Nelson Cruz, played 19 seasons of MLB, more recently in 2023. He is currently a special MLB advisor to baseball operations.
“Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passages of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of the tragedy last night in Santo Domingo,” said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, in a statement. “We send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been touched and to our colleague Nelson and to his whole family. The link between baseball and the Dominican Republic is deep, and we think of all Dominican players and fans through the game today. ”
The executive director of the MLB Players Association, Tony Clark, said that the union was united to the Dominican community “in the midst of incomprehensible sadness”.
Before Tuesday’s match, Diet manager Carlos Mendoza said that he “thought of our people in the Dominican Republic”.
“We have a lot of Dominican community in the world of baseball, so our prayers to their families,” said Mendoza.
Dotel ended his career in major leagues with 1,143 stick withdrawals in 951 rounds, a magnificent rate of 10.8 for nine sleeves. He had a career record of 59-50, 109 stops and 3.78 ERA.
In 2019, Dotel and ex-Major Leagher Luis Castillo were among the 18 people in police custody during a major American law enforcement of the United States against drug trafficking and money laundering. Dotel and Castillo were released when a Dominican magistrate found insufficient evidence to link them to the operation.
