Oakland standoff ends after 6 a.m.

Pitt police said a suspect who barricaded himself in an Oakland residence surrendered after a six-hour standoff on Christmas Day. The incident happened in the 300 block of Atwood Street around 1:30 a.m. Monday. Police said the suspect surrendered around 7:50 a.m. When officers arrived on scene, police said they attempted to make contact with the suspect, but were unsuccessful. As the police began to evacuate the neighbors, the suspect fired a bullet into his residence. Police said the suspect called 911 to say the shooting was accidental, but said he then made statements threatening to harm himself, police and others. For several hours, the suspect fired shots inside the residence as well as shots aimed at officers from the windows, police said. SWAT was also called to the scene. The suspect, identified as Bruce M. Straka, 36, finally surrendered shortly before 7:30 a.m. He is charged with terroristic threats and inadvertent endangerment. Straka is now incarcerated in the Allegheny County Jail.
