Regarding the New York metro, what was old is still new.
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority revealed a revamped map of the city’s metro system which is inspired by the back of the 1970s which was applauded by design connoisseurs and abjured by many traditionalists.
This is the first major overhaul of the metro card to be introduced by authority in almost 50 years.
The revelation of the card, on a Times Square train platform, was another stage in the MTA campaign to revitalize the image of the metro. This decision comes at a time when the authority puts pressure on billions of dollars to modernize the city’s public transport system, while postponing Washington criticism about crime and congestion prices.
The new map – a variation in bright colors of the current version which sacrifices certain geographic details for more clarity – recalls the UNIMARK map of 1972, a modernist rationalization of the metros which straightened the curricated contours of the system. The card was short -lived, replaced in 1979 by a current version.
Critics of the Unimark card deplored his striking departure of conventional cards. Benchmarks seemed crushed together. The water bodies were beige. Tourists who misused the distance between the stops were confused. But fans have seen an elegant solution to an increasingly complicated system.
The updated version, which mixes elements of the Unimark design with a successor known as the Tauranac card – named John Tauranac, a renowned New York mapping – is already displayed on digital monitors, and will be published in metro cars and platforms in the coming weeks, said MTA.
