NYC Crime: Car chase ends with police-involved shooting in the Bronx

THE BRONX (WABC) — A car chase that spanned two boroughs ended in a police-involved shootout Saturday night.

Police say this shooting happened in the Grand Concourse section of 161st Street and Summit Avenue, but the incident actually began when they received a call about a car being burglarized in Manhattan.

Officers responded to the scene at 149 Street and Convent Avenue in Hamilton Heights to investigate the car break-in.

Once there, they saw a car driving recklessly nearby, officials said.

Police began pursuing this reckless driver and ended up in the Bronx, where they arrested one of the people in that car.

Officials say another suspect fled into a swampy area near Major Deegan Highway. A few minutes later, the suspect pointed a gun at the police.

“At this point, members of the 3-0 Precinct engage this individual in a firefight. After this firefight, the individual runs into the swampy area right here alongside Major Deegan and a second exchange of gunfire takes place,” New York police said. » said Patrol Leader John Chell.

The police chief said the suspect was shot in the head and leg. The 39-year-old man is known to police and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
