NWSL expansion Bay FC rally to beat San Diego Wave and snap losing streak

Bay FC produced another home thriller Friday night, scoring twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Wave FC.

Scarlett Camberos and Racheal Kundananji scored for the expansion team (3-7-0), which ended a five-game losing streak before an announced crowd of 16,930 at PayPal Park in San Jose.

All five of Bay FC’s home games have been decided by a single goal. The team won two of these matches and the decisive goal in both these matches was scored in the 87th minute.

The Wave (3-4-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Kyra Carusa pounced on a loose ball off a corner and scored in the 23rd minute.

Bay FC, coming off a shutout loss to Orlando and being outscored 13-6 during the losing streak, broke through ten minutes into the second half. Kiki Pickett dribbled the ball into the box and found Camberos open on his left, who had time to move up and slide his shot into the right corner.

Camberos is the ninth different player to score for Bay FC this season.

In the 87th minute, Dorian Bailey hit a ball sent into the box just before goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan arrived and cut it for Kundananji, who slid in to push the ball into the goal. It was Kundananji’s second goal of the season, both coming in the last four games.

Bay FC ended San Diego’s 15-game winning streak as the Wave led at halftime. San Diego was 15-0-0 all-time in the NWSL regular season when leading at halftime.

Next up for Bay FC is a home game against NJ/NY Gotham FC (3-2-3) Friday at 7 p.m.
