Minecraft creator Markus Persson said he “basically announced Minecraft 2” after polling his social media followers about what game they’d like him to make next.
Two options were listed in the poll: a roguelike mixed with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler, and a spiritual successor to Minecraft, which in the poll was called “Minecraft 2.” At the time of publishing this article, 81% had chosen Minecraft 2 after 282,968 votes.

In a subsequent tweet, Notch admitted that he “basically announced Minecraft 2” and insisted he was “100% serious” about the poll.
“I thought maybe people REALLY wanted me to make another game very similar to the first one, and I love working on games again,” he continued.
“I don’t exactly care which play I make first (or even if I make more), but I know I make one, so I figured I’d absolutely be willing to give it a chance honest in the form of spiritual successor to Minecraft and launched a poll about it.
“My intentions are to be clear and honest about this, saying that spiritual successors are usually sort of… you know… failed. Tragic. The things I fear in my next match will be there anyway and I try to force myself to avoid them. So why not do what people want and are willing to give me, one way or another, even MORE money.
“I intend to spend money (sic) for good, but my goodness I have learned that I often fail. To win is to fail until you succeed.
“Oh, and I also really enjoy being a man of my word, so I also intend to do it in a way that in no way (sic) tries to sneakily encroach on the amazing work that the Mojang team does and that Microsoft succeeds in doing Microsoft’s shit.
“And I respect them for doing that. It’s their job. And from what I understand, they let the studio do things their way, which seems very fair to me.
On this basis, Notch begins work on a spiritual successor to Minecraft a decade after selling Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Mojang of course continues to work on the ever-popular Minecraft, releasing several updates each year across all platforms on which the sandbox game is available. Minecraft is officially the best-selling video game of all time, with an incredible 300 million copies sold. Microsoft has made no indication that it plans to release a Minecraft 2, which is not surprising given Minecraft’s popularity. Perhaps this leaves the door open for Notch to fill a gap from the original creator.
As Notch himself pointed out, it remains to be seen whether this “Minecraft 2” will ever see the light of day. Since its sale to Microsoft, the Swedish developer has started and stopped a number of games, including the space sandbox game 0x10c (pronounced “Ten to C”). However, in another tweet, Notch said the chances of him completing his projects are now higher than they were because he has employees he feels responsible for.
In subsequent tweets, Notch responded to questions from his social media followers about this Minecraft 2 and insisted that he didn’t want to use anything “too similar to what I have sold” in this new game. He also stated that his Minecraft 2 would not be a story game, suggesting a new sandbox. “I would create a game similar (to Minecraft) based on what I think the audience who says they want this game might enjoy,” he explained. “We’ll probably do early access to make sure we’re on the right track.”

Notch even added that if Minecraft ever wanted him to make an official Minecraft 2 and both parties agreed on the terms, “I would absolutely be willing to do that.”
“I would even give them a much larger share than I would feel obliged to, just to make it clear that I am not doing it with bad intentions,” he continued, before adding: “But I’ll be a bitch to work with.”
It seems unlikely that Microsoft would work with Notch, given that his name was removed from Minecraft’s opening credits following various controversial statements he made in the years since Mojang’s sale.
