Northern lights could be visible Friday night in New Hampshire if skies clear

If skies are clear Friday evening, it may be possible to see the Northern Lights in New Hampshire. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, a severe geomagnetic storm was detected earlier Friday morning. A coronal mass ejection was projected by the sun on Tuesday. and reached Earth on Friday. When charged particles hit Earth’s magnetic field, it could cause an aurora that could be visible in New England. Experts said the CME caused a G4-class geomagnetic storm. The storm that brought spectacular auroras visible across much of the United States in May was classified as G5. You can use your cell phone camera to help you spot the Northern Lights because the camera lens collects much more light than your eye. Point your phone camera at the sky and look at your phone screen. You may be able to see colors and shapes that are too faint for your eyes to distinguish. Take a photo or two, then put the phone away to see if you can see everything with your eyes as they adjust to the dark.
