NEW YORK – A powerful series of thunderstorms swept through the Northeast on Wednesday, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of utility customers and affecting flights at some of the nation’s busiest airports, just as Americans prepare to travel before the busy 4th of July holiday.
The National Weather Service has received hundreds of reports of severe weather-related storms, including damage from possible tornadoes and hurricane-force winds that have downed trees and power lines from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.

A hot day with temperatures in the 90s in the Big Apple turned into a stormy evening, with the Storm Prediction Center issuing severe thunderstorm warnings for millions of people on Wednesday.
Bright flashes lit up the sky above New York on Wednesday evening, and video recorded in New Jersey captured the moment lightning struck a Manhattan skyscraper.
Lightning striking high-rise buildings is common, and due to protection systems such as lightning rods and grounding devices, impacts are usually not felt indoors.

Nearly 300,000 utility customers remain in the dark after powerful storms hit the region Wednesday, with PowerOutage.us showing Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut seeing the most outages.
The severe weather brought thunderstorms with hurricane-force wind gusts, including a 77 mph gust reported at Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport (BDL), north of Hartford.
High winds also brought down trees and power lines in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, adding to reports of power outages.

Police said several trees were downed and blocked roads as powerful thunderstorms passed through the Bay State.

As of Thursday morning, more than 1,000 flight delays have already been reported, with John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) experiencing the highest number of delays.
However, the FOX Forecast Center said delays at these airports would likely have a ripple effect at airports across the United States, and delays were also reported at Orlando International Airport (MCO).
