North Carolina ranks second among states for business, down from last year

The state ranked No. 1 in both 2022 and 2023. This year, Virginia took the top spot, followed by North Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Florida.

2024 is the fifth consecutive year that CNBC has named North Carolina among the top three states for business, according to a press release from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office.

“Investing in our people allows us to continue our success,” Cooper said. “With our highly skilled workforce, trained by our strong public schools and thriving economy, with major investments from companies across all industries, North Carolina continues to be a premier destination for business.”

CNBC’s annual study compares 128 indicators across 10 competitiveness categories.

According to the governor, major North Carolina companies including Apple, Toyota, Wolfspeed, FUJIFILM Diosynth and Boom Supersonic contributed to the state’s high ranking.

The lowest-ranked states were Hawaii, Mississippi, Alaska, Louisiana and Montana.
