NOAA Atlantic hurricane season forecast calls for unusually active storms

Warm tropical Atlantic waters in May 2005 triggered warnings of an active hurricane season ahead. A record 28 storms formed, including Hurricane Katrina.

Nearly two decades of global warming later, late spring ocean temperatures are cool compared to today’s record waters. Government meteorologists released seasonal forecasts Thursday that predict storms could develop at frequencies and with ferocity comparable to some of the worst seasons in the past 19 years.
