No Jail Time for Indiana Man Who Killed His 9-Year-Old Daughter

CROWN POINT, Ind. — A northwest Indiana man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing his 9-year-old daughter while talking to his two brothers about gun safety will not serve jail time for her death in 2017.

A Lake County judge sentenced Eric S. Hummel, 38, on Thursday to one year to serve in the county’s community correctional program while living at home, followed by 3½ years probation.

Judge Natalie Bokota accepted the Hobart man’s guilty plea to reckless homicide and neglect of a dependent in the death of Olivia Hummel, the (Northwest Indiana) Times reported.

Prosecutors had requested an 8½-year prison term for Hummel, but Bokota said she agreed with Hummel’s lawyers that incarcerating him would cause further trauma for her boys.

According to court records, Hummel said he showed his sons a handgun and told them never to play with it “because it can kill someone” when he accidentally shot and killed his daughter.

Hummel told a 911 dispatcher that he hadn’t realized the gun was loaded when he pulled the trigger.

He admitted in his plea deal that he was talking to his sons about gun safety in a bedroom of his Hobart home in June 2017, when he pointed a handgun at the boys and pressed the button. trigger.

The handgun did not expel a projectile at the time, but pulling the trigger did cause the firing pin to engage, court records show.

When Olivia joined her siblings and father in the bedroom, Hummel pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger. She was shot in the head and died in hospital.
