Netflix’s CO-PDG, Ted Sarandos, explained an intriguing background about the reason why the streamer is not available in China and how the industry is “neglected” during commercial transactions.
Sarandos was interviewed at the Summit of the World Economy in Semaor on Wednesday, when he was asked about the company which is not available in the second world economy.
“Fifteen years ago, everyone thought (a presence in China) was existential,” said Sarandos. “I have been trying to do it a few years.”
These efforts, said Sarandos, have not gone nowhere.
“We actually had to face a company to obtain a license in our content … and part of the agreement was that the content had to erase the censorship board (from the Chinese government) to get to the air,” he recalls. “And in three years, that a single episode of a single Netflix program erased censorship – not one. (The government) had no interest in us in China.”
So, what happened next, Sarandos said: “I watched everyone spend the next decade to grind all his time to enter (in China), and finally finished in the same place as me – which is nowhere. We are one of the few companies in the United States has no exposure to China. I mean, no exposure to censorship of China, taxes, prices, something.
Speaking of prices, Sarandos was also questioned on the appropriate subject of commercial transactions and if Hollywood tends to obtain a “bad rap” as an industry despite hundreds of billions of world sales each year.
“I do not know a bad rap, but it is neglected as an industry,” said Sarandos. “Netflix alone – I think that from 2020 to 2024 – contributed 125 billion dollars to the American economy and created 140,000 jobs … but I think that is neglected as an industry. We are sort of thrown under the bus in commercial offers from time to time. People forget that it is a real business. You almost never see a seated president being photographed in a lot in the studio. ”
Freshly out of a success report on April 17 – which beat Wall Street’s expectations in terms of income, sending analysts’ stock markets – Co -chef has a busy schedule. After the Semaor event in DC, Sarandos was expected at the Time100 summit later in the day in New York.
