Northern Nigeria authorities in Nigeria say that at least 150 people were killed after flooding triggered by strong precipitation struck Mokwa, a largely agricultural state market.
Ibrahim Hussaini, spokesperson for the state emergency management agency, told CNN only 151 organizations, including those of “many children”, were recovered at 9 a.m. (4 h) on Saturday.
More than 3,000 other people have been moved, said Hussaini, adding that the number of deaths could increase while rescuers are looking for more bodies.
Mokwa resident Hassan Abdullahi, 26, told CNN that he had lost nine family members, including his elderly mother, as well as two nieces and nephews aged 4 to 8 when floods submerged their house.
“I feel so bad. How I would like to be able to bring them back (back) alive but no means,” he said, adding that none of their personal effects has been recovered from raging floods.
“We have lost everything. Even a single fabric and shoes, we don’t have. Where to sleep, we don’t have. We have serious pain.”
The rescue agency in the event of a western disaster (NEMA) said in a previous announcement that the floods had struck the Kpege district of Mokwa early Thursday, “When residents were sleeping mainly.”
The government of the state of Niger said The “deadly flood disaster” has ravaged two city communities “after several hours of abversors”, which led to “loss of many lives” and “submerged buildings”.
He described the incident as “sad, heartbreaking and pathetic”.
Northern Nigeria is subject to annual floods which often lead to deaths and trips.
