The American chess player Hans Niemann withdrew from the next Paris stage of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 a few hours after being informed of the implementation of new anti-triche measures, according to a report. Niemann had recently shared an article on social networks informing his supporters that he would soon come to Paris.
However, the organizers announced on Saturday that Niemann had withdrawn from the tournament at the last minute and that Nodirbek Abdusattorov will replace him during the event. Meanwhile, the Norwegian outing TV 2 reported that Neimann withdrew at the last minute as soon as he learned the new security measures.
The management of the event confirmed TV 2 This Niemann retired shortly before his arrival scheduled at the tournament hotel. Its release comes as a result of an announcement by the organizers and billionaire Jan Henric Buettner, who revealed the installation of advanced security equipment aimed at detecting cheating.
The report claims to have seen exchanges of messages which indicate that Niemann’s decision came immediately after being informed of the improved security configuration. Niemann’s official explanation for his withdrawal was cited as “personal reasons”.
Buettner, the founder of Freestyle Chess, co -owner by the bitter rival of Niemann, Magnus Carlsen, expressed his disappointment as to the sudden withdrawal of the American legacy of the competition.
“We are obviously incredibly disappointed to hear about Niemann’s withdrawal of this event. But we are very happy to have found an incredible replacement with Nodirbek Abdusattorov in a very short time,” said Buettner in a statement at Chess.com.
The late withdrawal from Niemann haussed the eyebrows among the initiates of chess, in particular because of the timing. He had been added to the tournament after being excluded from the opening, and was to compete with the elite opposition, of which Carlsen, who had previously accused him of cheating.
Niemann later admitted to having cheated in online games, but denied all the allegations that Carlsen made and continued a defamation trial of $ 100 million. The legal battle came from the public allegations of Carlsen according to which Niemann had cheated during the Sinquefield Cup in 2022. The case was finally settled amicably in 2023.
The controversy has resurfaced recently when Carlsen saw the subject when it appeared on a podcast. The former world champion has thought about the scandal and reviving the reactions. Niemann, in response, ripples strongly: “I prefer to retire rather than look at the malicious accusations and the assassination of the characters. My commitment to failures is eternal, failures will speak in due time. ”
