It was a strange week with regard to the defensive rear, the draft of the NFL 2025 and the Lions of Detroit.
It started with the old corner half of Michigan Will Johnson. Once presumed a choice among the first 10 before a 2024 season did not take place as planned, Johnson organized a training session before the cog this week, and some experts in the NFL recovery were not impressed. There are speed problems with Johnson, and with a short shuttle of 4.33 and a refusal to execute the dashboard of 40 yards, his training did not put these concerns in the bed. This has led some to speculate that Johnson can slide the draft further than some people expect it.
A few days later, athletics Dane Brugler split a different cornerback – Maxwell Hairston from Kentucky – Lions at 28 in total in his recovery of seven rounds. Few lions fans were satisfied with this choice, because Detroit has already invested a lot in the corner position.
Quick advance until Thursday, and the director general of Lions, Brad Holmes, reiterated once again that the team is not interested in writing specific positions, they are interested in writing good football players.
“When you start hunting needs, it’s like the need may have meaning for the moment, but we make these choices for future investments,” said Holmes this week.
Put it all together, and he wonders some fans: could the lions write another defensive back with the 28th choice in total? Erik Schlitt and I discussed this about the latest Podcast Mailbag in the middle of the week, speaking specifically to know if Detroit would be able to avoid the temptation of Willie Johnson or Georgia Safety Malaki Starks if they are sitting there in total. This discussion begins at the brand 39:15 in the podcast below.
The other subjects of this week include:
- What positions of position (apart from perhaps WR) the lions are they not in a hurry to spend a lot of money?
- If the lions exercise the fifth year option of Jameson Williams, would this salary go to another team if he was exchanged?
- What is the best combination of Grain + villain in this project for Lions?
- What makes Donovan Ezeiruaku a good adjustment to Detroit?
- Could there be a massive race on defensive line players this year? How would it have an impact on the Lions?
- Three players, we do not want the Lions to write at 28
- Which one is most likely at 28: Tyler Booker or a cornerback?
- What is most important for this class project: the quantity (for salary ceiling purposes) or quality?
- Should this lions regime win a possible super bowl to be considered a success?
