Mission Viejo – Corinna Ruffini of Newport Harbor remembers his introduction to diving emotion. She was impatient for a new sport.

During her college years, the pandemic closed her gymnasium for gymnastics. It was then that Ruffini Windy’s mother spotted a panel for the various club coast.

“I no longer liked gymnastics,” recalls Ruffini. “(Diving) is my saving grace.”

Ruffini’s climb of Ruffini has been impressive since and continued during the final of CIF-SS Division 1 Thursday at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex.

Ruffini went up on the 1 meter springboard for her 11th and last dive with a chance to become the first girl from Newport Harbor to win a diving title in the section.

The junior marked mainly 7.5s on a difficult withdrawal and in front 2 1/2, but finished second in El Segundo Freshman Reilly Stebbins to help highlight the last day of the section diving championships.

Ruffini collected a score of 526.40 to finish approximately 1.5 points behind Stebbins (528.05), which executed some difficult dives late to secure the title.

“It was really close to the end,” said Ruffini. “(Stebbins) made incredible. It was so fun. It’s good to have a competition like that.

“I was quite happy (my last dive),” she added. “If I was a little tightened (at the entrance), there would have been a little less splash, so I had to clean it a little. I was quite straight from top to bottom, but if I had tightened my arms closer to my head, (it would have been a) little tighter, (with) fewer splashes and fewer bubbles.”

The attention of Ruffini to details and the degree of difficulty on his dives show his ascent.

By climbing three places of a fifth place in Division 1 last season, the degree of difficulty of his final dive was 2.4. In the 10th round, she performed well on a front of 1 1/2 somersauts with two twists and turns which carried 2.6 degree of difficulty.

She executed even more difficult dives earlier on the 3 -meter springboard.

“Everything I saw, I liked it,” said Newport Harbor coach Kaeden Cogbill, who also leads to Ruffini at Coast Miscellaneous. “And we finish (practicing) two more difficult dives.”

Cogbirl attributes the progress of Ruffini, which includes its commitment to the University of Houston in November, to its work ethics. Coast divers strongly believe in dry land training, he said.

“I love it,” said Ruffini about diving. “It’s the thrill but a little less fear.

“I put in work,” she added. “When I started to dive, I felt that I was very late because a group of my friends dived since they were 5 years old. It was really fun to progress. ”

Stebbins made a major movement in the 10th round, marking well on a Buck of 3 1/2 somersauts in front on the 3 -meter springboard. The dive bore a degree of difficulty of 2.8.

“She is standing,” said veteran Larry Brennan judge about Stebbins.

The second year student of San Juan Hills Callie Fox (502.80) and Mater Dei Junior Gianna Kenrick from Mater Dei (485.55) finished third and fourth, respectively. Newport Harbor Junior, Violet Carone, ranked fifth with a score of 482.30.

In the competition of boys, Valentino Nieto (506.70) by Santa Margarita and Grant Schneider by Capistrano Valley Christian (600.35) claimed titles in Division 1 and Division 4, respectively. Schneider, a senior committed to Stanford, posted the highest scoring for any division.

Wednesday, Chase Shipp de Laguna Beach (565.80) won division 2.

The qualification of state boys and girls is on Tuesday at the Mt. Sac at 2 p.m.

Kenrick, who is engaged in Kentucky, said that she would not be for qualification due to the next American nationals in Auburn, Alberta. Fox is qualified for the same meeting.
